Compatibility mode allows you to use drivers that were written for earlier versions of Windows when a Windows 7 driver is not available I set my bios to Iich9m and Boot from cd first and put in my XP SP3 integrated cd a non-destructive reinstall replaces the system leaving the data and installed programs intact, but you lose any criticals that are not on the cd, thats why I used an integrated one.

The Intel Driver Update utility suggested the After booting into saata XP install disk, and doing the F6 to get the drivers in, the first window talks about a repair but its the recovery console so you instead hit Enter and continue like its a real install. Are you absolutely certain the drive is compatible with the system and your version of Vista and that you have the proer drivers installed? XP finds new hardware, reboot again and all done. I downloaded and installed nLite version 1. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers.

Using an Acronis recovery CD and Acronis recovery archives created via regular backups means that I can recover from a catastrophic error such as the one you describe by inserting the CD, choosing partition restoration and pointing to the right recovery archive, usually on an external hard drive or 2nd hard drive within the machine if there is one.
